Meet Allison Barton, LMFT

Certified EMDR Therapist, San Diego

Before opening my private practice in 2023, I worked in a variety of settings in my career as a clinician with many different populations. I have previously worked in a residential setting with teens in crisis, offered family therapy to foster children, and worked in a group practice with teenagers, individuals, and families.

I was first trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing in 2018 and was pleasantly surprised to experience the benefits of the technique first hand. I elected to continue my EMDR education by working towards earning my certification, which involved ongoing training and supervision. This treatment is incredibly effective at chipping away at negative beliefs and core wounds, including things like “I’m unlovable” or “I’m not good enough.”

The modality was initially designed to treat post traumatic stress disorder and has since been shown to be effective at reducing fear, phobias, panic, and anxiety. It is impactful at reducing different aspects of trauma, including PTSD, physical trauma, sexual trauma, and emotional trauma. EMDR also helps to improve mental health conditions including low self-esteem, depression, and grief. This treatment simulates rapid eye movement (REM) sleep to reduce the intensity of specific traumatic incidents.

Through my work, I have been able to successfully help people reduce trauma triggers and replace core wounds with more adaptive beliefs, such as believing they are worthy and good enough. If you're looking for EMDR therapy in San Diego, schedule a free consultation call today and we can discuss your goals.

My approach to EMDR

I approach my work with every client using a trauma-informed lens, meaning I’m on the lookout for deeper wounds and beliefs that are keeping people stuck in unwanted symptoms and behaviors. I find that working with my clients in this way helps them to achieve deeper healing rather than reducing symptoms temporarily through traditional psychotherapy.

My approach to EMDR is unique because I work on targeting core beliefs rather than single traumatic incidents. This means that we group different incidents together when they have caused the person to experience the same negative belief about themselves. This also leads to longer lasting success because people are able to gain broad insights into their behaviors and beliefs, rather than desensitizing certain traumatic incidents without addressing the client’s core beliefs as a whole.

I integrate Acceptance and Commitment therapy with EMDR therapy to help clients accept certain aspects of their lives that they are unable to change immediately, which reduces overall emotional distress levels. I find that using EMDR therapy is more effective than traditional talk therapy and helps my clients reach their goals faster.

Common reasons why people start EMDR therapy

This type of therapy is becoming more well-known and for good reason- it's highly effective and often takes less time for you to reach your therapy goals than traditional psychotherapy. EMDR began as a therapy to treat post traumatic stress and has expanded into a treatment modality that can also be used to treat other mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, perfectionism, OCD, and more.

  • If you want to address the root cause of your struggles rather than just managing symptoms through traditional talk therapy, EMDR therapy could be a powerful solution for you. We can work through panic, anxiety, depression, and fear of setting healthy boundaries using EMDR.

  • People want to move past traumatic incidents quickly. EMDR is an effective form of therapy to work through difficult issues you've experienced. If you struggle with mental health concerns like high-functioning anxiety and perfectionism, EMDR helps to rewire unhelpful patters at their root level so you can reach your true potential.

  • If you participate in traditional psychotherapy, you would be asked to recount your trauma verbally. Some situations are difficult to put into words and this treatment allows clients to heal without needing to verbalize everything, making EMDR a good choice.

  • If you find yourself in unsatisfying or unhealthy relationship patterns, EMDR can help you break free by addressing the limiting beliefs that have made setting boundaries difficult. This type of therapy can also help you heal the pain you have experienced in previous relationships so you don't continue to repeat the same patterns.

FAQs about EMDR therapy

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy works by asking the person to recall a painful memory while following back and forth eye movements from the clinician. If someone is not comfortable with bilateral eye movements, other forms of bilateral stimulation can be used (bilateral tapping, bilateral audio, or bilateral drawing). This technique helps your brain desensitize the incident you're processing through, whether you're working through PTSD or core wounds you've experienced in your life. Your brain then reprocesses the painful memory, kind of life cleaning out an old wound that was infected.

The bilateral stimulation allows people to remain grounded in the present moment while working through distressing or traumatic incidents. This aids in healing traumatic experiences because clients experience safety while reprocessing difficult events in their history. Overtime, the emotional charge related to the painful memory fades so the incident doesn’t feel as painful or triggering in daily life.

  • After coping mechanisms are in place and traumatic incidents have been identified, a typical EMDR session consists of the client and therapist agreeing on a memory/incident to process in that session. The client will allow distressing feelings to arise while using bilateral stimulation, which gradually allow the brain to let go of distressing feelings. Then, the therapist and client work on installing a more positive belief.

    • People who struggle with emotional regulation: If someone lacks coping skills or has severe emotional dysregulation, EMDR will feel overwhelming and will not be helpful. Lots of preparatory work can be done for these people if they want to utilize EMDR therapy.

    • People experiencing severe mental health issues, including dissociation or psychosis: Participating in EMDR requires a person to be able to differentiate between reality and their memories/thoughts. Those prone to dissociating are not ideal candidates for this type of therapy.

    • Neurological Conditions or Seizure Disorders: Some people with neurological conditions or seizures may need to consult with their doctor before participating in EMDR therapy.

    • People who aren’t ready to process trauma: Not everyone is ready to process their trauma, and that’s okay! If you’re not ready, this modality might feel too intense for you and is not aligned with your current goals.

    • People experiencing mental health crises: EMDR may not be appropriate if you are experiencing a crisis and need stabilization skills. However, you could utilize the modality with a clinician once your crisis has stabilized and you're ready to work on deeper mental health issues.

  • The American Psychiatric Association has reported that 75% of people who attend traditional talk therapy receive some benefit. One study showed that as little as one session of EMDR led to reduced stress in follow up sessions. Another study showed that as little as 3 EMDR sessions led to 84% remission in those experiencing post traumatic stress disorder. These findings suggest that EMDR is more effective than traditional talk therapy.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing has been shown to be equally as effective virtually as it is in person. People who participate in EMDR virtually report the same decrease in emotional distress as the people I work with in person. Many studies have shown that EMDR therapy is quicker and more effective than Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Several other studies have shown that EMDR rapidly decreases vividness of disturbing memories/images and reduces negative emotions quickly.  EMDR therapy can be done in as little as 6-12 sessions for a single incident.
